This is a two part sound installation work.
Initially listening to the guidance on headphones you are lead to spot a light 29 meters away and walk a distance towards that signaling spot (“how_tall_is”1’33”) .
When you arrive there you get to listen on loop the sound recording of a vocabulary lesson on the uses of the word “measure”.
(“measure_her_up”, 4’32”).
This work was produced at a workshop in the island of Syros, at the time when the news for new financial measures (“capital controls”) being imposed to Greece was announced. The idea of "tallness" uses as reference the -now abandoned- tallest light house of Greece (29 meters high) situated on the island at a time it was a rich and thriving industrial area in the country.
Light houses act as a signifiers for the will to control, signal, measure and save the seas and the world.
By using a teaching lesson of english- the universally used language of commerce and shipping- I wanted to research on words' ability to conceive and express the notion of measuring while questioning its value. The machine voice fails technically and meanings get ironically confused.
The title of the work is a phrase from the Merchant of Venice. "We must measure twenty miles today" is Portia's (non-)answer to her friend when questioned by her on the use of their disguise.
They are in a hurry, there is no time for explanations, they have a great distance to travel (measure, old use of the word), Portia says.
